Bruce Cockburn’s memoir: Rumours of Glory
BLOG POST: Interviewing Bruce Cockburn
Bruce Cockburn has a global following as one of the world’s most prolific and highly respected musicians. He blends folk with world influences that are based on first-hand experience due to his extensive travels and collaborations with musicians from around the world. His music is both personal and universal, and often raises awareness of political events and social injustice. One of the world’s leading guitarists, he performs at a tremendous level of virtuosity that is particularly evident on his most recent instrumental album “Crowing Ignites.” Cockburn had planned to tour this Fall (2020) to celebrate 50 years of his career, however the tour is postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can still enjoy his music with the release of his multi-CD set from the label True North Records, available at www.brucecockburn.com
Cockburn has written over 350 songs, recorded nearly forty albums, won 13 JUNO Awards, received the Governor-General’s Performing Arts Award, is the recipient of eight honorary doctorates, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. It is incredible to process his level of creativity. Although he is one of the leading musicians in the world and has received countless accolades, he is very humble and has a wonderful sense of humour. His candid memoir “Rumours of Glory” provides insight into his life, career, travels, and his reflections on the situations he has witnessed, including refugee camps and war-torn areas throughout the world. He is a musician of thought, generosity and introspection. It was a tremendous pleasure and honour to interview him.

BLOG POST
It was a great pleasure speaking with Don Shebib, a director who changed the direction of Canadian film. He originally made his mark fifty years ago with the film “Goin’ Down the Road” with leading Canadian actors that played earthy characters, plus a stellar soundtrack written by the legendary singer-songwriter and virtuoso guitarist Bruce Cockburn. Filmed with a ridiculously low budget and a film crew smaller than the cast, the movie had a gritty yet endearing quality that has become a cult classic and is often featured in film festivals.
Shebib has directed many films and documentaries in his lengthy career, including 'Good Times, Bad Times’ that features interviews with veterans from World War I and II as they discuss the incredible challenges they faced after the wars ended.
In typical Canadian modesty, Shebib credits his success to being “lucky,” rather than his enormous talent. His good nature and humour are apparent in the two podcast episodes, with subjects ranging from his own work to Marshall McLuhan, The Beach Boys, the American election, a COVID-19 vaccine, and his upcoming film! Shebib is a great storyteller, which made this a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable interview. - Dr. Rea Beaumont

Andrew McLuhan
EPISODE 1 Andrew McLuhan on Marshall McLuhan & Culture with Rea Beaumont
Andrew McLuhan, Director of The McLuhan Institute, discusses the cultural impact of his grandfather Marshall McLuhan (The Medium is the Massage), father Eric McLuhan, and the initiatives The McLuhan Institute has launched to carry their legacy forward, in this candid interview with host Rea Beaumont.
BLOG POST
For the first episode I had the privilege and pleasure of interviewing Andrew McLuhan, Director of The McLuhan Institute, who speaks candidly about being part of the McLuhan legacy he is carrying forward. In this in-depth discussion Andrew shares his insight into the work of his father Eric McLuhan and grandfather Marshall McLuhan, including their impact on arts and culture. Andrew even offers a new way of interpreting Marshall McLuhan’s writings.
Due to COVID-19, Andrew was working from home so you will hear the outdoor sounds from the playground. The audio was de-noised but I think how Marshall McLuhan would have embraced the sounds because they act as a commentary on how the pandemic has shaped our new reality and it provides a shapshot of our lives. After all, Marshall decided to keep the typo “massage" in the title of his book The Medium is the Massage, which Andrew also discusses in this podcast. Sincere thanks to Andrew for being a fantastic guest. - Rea Beaumont
The McLuhan Institute is “dedicated to preserving and carrying forward McLuhan studies in the McLuhan tradition.” You can support The McLuhan Institute's important work at Patreon.
